Closet Refresh

Getting ready to rid your home of winter clutter? You're not alone! Spring fever has arrived & with it comes the anticipation of new beginnings, transformation & the urge to freshen up interior spaces. The closet is the perfect place to start because spring is also a time of wardrobe transition. Prepare to say goodbye to heavy coats, dark tones and welcome light jackets and bright hues with our favorite ways to organize and refresh the closet. Before you get started, take some time to ensure everything in the space is sorted & grouped by type. This will give you a better idea of what you own, help guide editing decisions, & make it easy to find what you need down the road.

EDIT

No space refresh is complete without removing the items that no longer serve you. We suggest taking a hard look at your winter wardrobe & setting aside anything that hasn't been worn in the last year for donation or consignment. Any sweaters, coats or boots that didn't get worn this past winter should be up for debate. This is also a good time to look over your spring and summer items as you prepare to start wearing them more. Say goodbye to anything that is damaged beyond repair or no longer fits. Not feeling equipped to make hard decisions? Enlist the help of an honest friend with a try-on session of the pieces in question. Selling anything that is in good condition also helps to soften the blow.

RELOCATE

Rearrange your closet by locating categories based on frequency of use. That may mean moving boots & scarves to upper shelves and lowering sandals and swimwear. Or, maybe it involves placing winter in weathertight bins & storing them out of sight until next season. Whatever you choose to do, make sure the pieces you'll be wearing the most are prioritized by placing them in "prime real estate" zones. This includes eye-level shelves, top drawers and hanging rods nearest the closet door. While you're at it, give everything a wipe down to really freshen up the space.

ELEVATE

One of the easiest ways to refresh your closet is to switch to matching slimline hangers. This not only immediately elevates the look of the space, but a hanger with a slim profile also allows you to hang more on your closet rod,. At NEAT, we're all about providing boundaries to categories in an aesthetically pleasing way that works with your decor, not against it. Select an elegant soft-sided bin that won't snag delicate fabrics to contain individual categories like hats, scarves and swimwear. Don't forget to add labels. This ensures your system remains intact and you know exactly where everything lives. Lastly, if you're feeling encouraged to take your organization to the next level, color coding your categories offers a clean visual and makes it easier to find what you're looking for as you scan your drawers and closet rod.
